Standing Up For Human Rights and Religious Freedom

The Conservative government believes strongly in protecting human rights and religious freedom.

Our government has consistently stood up for human rights both here in Canada and around the world whenever these have been threatened; we led dozens of nations in walking out on heinous anti-semitic speeches in the UN; was the first country to boycott the international hate-filled Durban II conference; and the Harper government has condemned and confronted rogue nations when they enact authoritarian crackdowns on democratic reformers.

Here at home the Harper government led the way in a formal parliamentary apology for the decades of abuse at Canada’s residential schools; has called for the extension of property and Charter rights to residents of Canada’s reserves; and is proposing changes to Canada’s asylum system to provide protection to more legitimate refugees and filtering out those trying to abuse the system.
